While many people think South Florida doesn’t have surf, all the pictures located on this site are from Broward county.

Surf Spots in Fort Lauderdale Beach

We’ll give you a few of the well known surf spots here and let you know the general surfing areas in Fort Lauderdale. To start, the main surfing area in Fort Lauderdale is from Sunrise Blvd, North, NE 17th St is a good place to start if you’re on the main part of Fort Lauderdale Beach looking to surf. There are some areas that break on the South End of the beach, it’s just harder to park down there, due to condos and hotels on the beach. The Non Surfing area runs from Las Olas Blvd on the South end to Sunrise Blvd on the North End, the beach here is closed for surfing while the lifeguards are on duty.

North Fort Lauderdale Surf Spots

Lauderdale By The Sea The main surf spot in the north end of town is Commercial Pier. The pier is located directly at the end of Commercial Blvd. The pier can produce some steep fun sections that don’t break that far out. So when it’s bigger the paddle is manageable. It’s a pretty low pier that actually just lost a section from Hurricane Nicole in November of 2022.

Other cities with surf near Fort Lauderdale

Hollywood Beach / Dania Beach

The first city to the south of Fort Lauderdale is Dania Beach, Dania has a couple surf spots from the Dania Beach Pier to the Jetty inside Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park that can get good on certain days. The Jetty will block the current on big NE wind chop days, so this makes paddling out easier than some other spots. It will usually be a little smaller at the jetty, but on those big victory at sea days the jetty will still be fun and it should be a little cleaner than other spots. Hollywood Florida, has some of the strictest surfing rules in all of Broward county. When the lifeguards are on duty you can only surf on the very north end “Franklin Street” or the very south end “Azalea Street” of the city beaches.

Pompano Beach

Pompano is the first city to the North of Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach has some good surf spots. Pompano Beach picks up north swells better than most spots in Fort Lauderdale, so if you are chasing winter cold front swell, Pompano might be the call. There are a few spots worth checking out. Directly out front of Atlantic Blvd. are a series of sandbars that offer up some barrels when a big swell is hitting. Pompano Beach Pier was recently redone and the north side has some fun surf on SE – E wind swell. HIllsboro Inlet is on the North end of town and has some reefs offshore that can break on the right swell. It gets shallow out there so this should only be surfed by experienced surfers. We’ve see some pretty big sealife out on those reefs so keep you eyes open too.

Deerfield Beach

Deerfield Beach is the furthest North city in Broward county. The Pier in Deerfield Beach has some really rippable peaks on the right swell. Along with Pompano, Deerfield Beach gets more North Swell than Fort Lauderdale does during cold fronts. I’ve seen plenty of swells where Fort Lauderdale will be waist to chest high and Deerfield Beach will be head high. Trespass is a surf spot located about 3/4 mile south of deerfield pier, it’s named after the old No Trespassing sign that used to be located on the south end of the beach. Trespass can get good on certain days, the sandbars are constantly shifting so it worth looking at the different peaks to find which one is working the best.
